Top Ten Celeb Fashion Must-Haves
Arylene Westlake | April 14, 2010 at 2:40 pmThere is cult fashion, and then there is celebrity cult fashion. As we find out what Hollywood is wearing each week for our Celebrity Fashion section, certain things tend to pop up quite often and we’ve definitely noticed.
1. YSL Tribtoo pumps

When Yves Saint Laurent released their “Tributes”, we all went gaga for the platform sandal with its knotted toe straps and sexy gladiator-esque design. But since the release of the “Tribtoo,” celebrities have gone mad for the concealed platform pump with its ultra-skinny stiletto and elongating powers. It easily became the go-to shoe for everyone from Miley Cyrus to Eva Longoria, all hoping to get a quick boost from the 4.5-inch heels. They cost in the vicinity of £500 and come in every colour of the rainbow — as evidenced in Victoria Beckham‘s closet.
2. Proenza Schouler PS1 bag

This is just another one of those bags that for no real reason, take pride of place as the “it” bag of the season. Seen slung on the shoulders of everyone from Nicky Hilton and Dakota Fanning to Leighton Meester and Mandy Moore. Like its Balenciaga counterpart, Proenza Schouler has seen the value in creating a classic and re-inventing the colours each season giving celebrities no excuse not to own one. The everyday bag comes in different sizes and offers a long strap to suit most casual outfits, made from the most buttery of leathers.
3. Rayban Wayfarer 2140 sunglasses

This 50s classic was revived in the past few seasons by everyone from Mary-Kate Olsen to Lily Allen. We can’t say it has overtaken the über-cool Rayban aviators but it has certainly achieved a spot in the fashion charts. The polarised plastic sunnies cost about A$200 — loose change for celebrities really. The frames made their Hollywood debut in 1961 when Audrey Hepburn wore them for her role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and have come and gone in waves ever since. Wayfarers are cited to be the bestselling design of glasses in history, featuring oversized metal hinges and mineral glass lenses, and we’re sure we’ll see them for years to come.
4. Brian Atwood Maniac pumps

Just like its YSL friend, Brian Atwood “Maniac” hidden platform pumps have found a place in the closet of Tinseltown’s most fashionable ladies. The shoes come in several finishes, including leather, patent, quilted, and metallic leathers, and feature a 1 1/2-inch platform. And there’s hardly a red carpet in the past six months that haven’t been graced by a pair of these. We’ve seen them so far on the feet of Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, Kristin Cavallari and Eva Mendes.
5. Bottega Veneta Knot purse

Another cult fashion item seen in the clutches of the celebrity set is the Bottega Veneta “The Knot” clutch, starting at about £760. The perfectly designed box clutch is nothing short of stunning yet holds a simplicity and classic curves that will keep it new in your wardrobe for years to come. The fashion and celebrity set like the clutch for all their red carpet events, with the tiny purse rumoured to be able to contain a compact camera, Blackberry, mirror and lipstick all night for the special occasion.
6. Burberry trenchcoat

As Burberry itself describes the coat, it is timeless, classic and functional. The iconic wardrobe addition is updated every season by the design house, and is usually reserved by the British set such as Kate Moss, Keira Knightley and the always fashion-forward Victoria Beckham. The overcoat has become so synonymous with celebrity style that it has spawned its own dedicated website at ArtoftheTrench.com. Why do the stars love it so much? Because it’s simply chic.
7. Hermès Birkin bag

We cannot forget the ubiquitous Hermès “Birkin” Bag, named after fashion icon Jane Birkin. Owning one of these puts you into an exclusive group of fashionable folk, with each bag costing upwards of US$6,500 and more. Yet again, style setter Victoria Beckham takes the cake with a US$129,000 diamond and crocodile version given to her by husband David. Nowadays, it sits on the fashionable arms of Kim Kardashian, Heidi Montag and Lady Gaga.
8. Alexander McQueen Skull scarf

Alexander McQueen set off a fashion frenzy when he launched his first skull scarf, then followed up with pashmina and silk versions then saw a place cosying up to the necks of Nicole Richie, Sienna Miller and Kourtney Kardashian. Although it is unfortunate that designer Lee McQueen saw an untimely death, we cross our fingers that this will remain a classic and see newer variations made each season.
9. Blackberry

Yes, the Hollywood set is a bunch of Crackberry addicts and they put it to good use with their non-stop Twittering at all hours of the day. The most notorious of the bunch? None other than Lindsay Lohan of course, who tweets all day and has never been photographed without the device secured firmly in her right hand.
10. Balmain jacket

Balmain’s 2009 collection was probably the most coveted line featured that season, with celebrities clawing their way at every tuxedo and military jacket available. The coverups all had one thing in common: pointed, padded shouders that could poke an eye out. The high street bunch followed suit, issuing their own versions but nothing came close to Christoph Decarnin’s genius design and ultra-flattering silhouette. As seen on Beyoncé, Sarah Jessica Parker and Sandra Oh.
