SELF-made fashion icon Victoria Beckham started her presentation at New York Fashion Week by personally greeting each and every one of the 25 or so editors and retailers assembled in the Upper East Side townhouse to view it.

“When does that ever happen?” someone asked after shaking her hand, referring to the fact most designers prefer to hide out backstage for their presentations.

As has become Victoria’s style over the past three seasons, she narrated as the models strut out in her designs, describing fabric, colour, cut and construction. She sounded so much of a pro you almost forger she was once a cheesy girl group member – that is, until she pointed out the buff-coloured asymmetric gown with its grosgrain ribbon belt and said: “I’m going to wear this one to the Oscars.” She discussed the hand-tucking and blurred pixel print lifted from a Dick tracy comic, and chatted about what a nightmare it was to put together.

You could see a little bit of Victoria in every dress that walked out – and there wasn’t a bad dress in the bunch. Is it because we’re secretly in love with the Spice Girl’s gloriously sophisticated style? Or because we loved the hourglass silhouettes she so endearingly wants to epitomise on her lithe frame? No matter the case, her line of everyday sexiness will continue to win her a new class of fans.
