Runway Review: Twenty8Twelve by Sienna & Savannah Miller, London

“WE never intended to set ourselves up against Christopher Bailey,” Sienna Miller said with a touch of weariness, when asked why she and fashion designer sister, Savannah, opted for a low-key presentation instead of a show this season for their label, Twenty8Twelve.
“That would be ridiculous. I don’t claim to be a designer, and I think people were misinterpreting our intentions.” Too right – not many would step up to the challenge of showing at the same time as Bailey’s Burberry Prorsum.
Although celebrities like Victoria Beckham and the Olsen sisters constantly proving that putting their name to fashion doesn’t equal epic failures, the Miller sisters continue to come under fire of the British press. Perhaps that explains Sienna’s defensive response, but we think they’re not being given credit where it’s due.
Twenty8Twelve does not seek to be a high-end label like Victoria’s or the Olsens’ The Row – the clothes, while doubtlessly British and a bit of girly fun, does not display the kind of skill that have won the other labels critical acclaim.
The upside to that? Twenty8Twelve is much more consumer (and recession) friendly. Acid wash jeans coast about US$185, a leather jacket with shearling sleeves is less that YS$775. But the fact that it’s on the official London Fashion Week schedule means it’s held to a higher standard than, say, Kim Kardashian‘s Bebe line.
The collection offered some great pieces such as the giant crochet cardigan, black tops with fringed shoulders, and a fatigue-style green minidress, pieces that would look at place on the street rather than under the scrutiny of the fashion week crowd.
