We’ll be heading out as soon as the weather heats up in time for that spate of music festivals Australia plays host to each summer. But when you’re online at 8.58am waiting in line to get those tickets, the last thing on your mind is what you’re going to wear.

Festival fashion is an artform, honed to perfection by regulars from V Festival to Big Day Out. But remember that there’s a huge difference between attendance at one-dayers and weekend camping efforts at, say, Southbound. For the one day festivals such as Future Music and Good Vibrations, think sexy, fresh vibes that offer both form and function. For those stuck in tents, think survival – get together an arsenal of quick fixes and don’t sweat the small stuff.

The weather should help your decision along because while summer tends to be scorching – bring on the sunblock and hats! – you never know if there’s gonna be an unexpected downpour on the way. Luckily, temperatures don’t drop more than a few degrees so all that is called for is some good shoes to fend off the mud and clothes that will dry quick enough! Or if you really want to be prepared, start practising your best pose in that $2 poncho.

Wellies tend to be favoured by our Glastonbury cousins but over here, the sweatier weather calls for trusty trainers or your favourite Jack Purcells. Leave the flip flops and gladiator sandals at home – nobody needs a stubbed toe or worse, a broken one.

Now comes the best part: the fashion. It is definitely tempting to put on your favourite outfit for the festival, but mud and grass stains are your greatest enemy because you’ll eventually want to sit down. You’re not going to lose that chance to snog a celebrity if opportunity presents itself but let’s be honest, you’re more likely to garner attention from that mud wrestling pervert on the day!

Bikini tops and bright tank tops are a great start, as are denim hot pants or anything rugged and short! Corduroy minis are making a return appearance this season and work well with lightweight hoodies or funky scarves over a cute t-shirt. Maxi dresses are another great choice but watch out for snagged hemlines when you’re bouncing around to the music. Bring a small bag that slings across your body for the essentials – including pain killers, your mobile phone, a camera (if allowed) and extra sunblock.

The boys should opt for simple shorts or boardies, but cargos offer a lot more in the way of pocket space. Tank tops and t-shirts are merely a personal decision but drench yourself in deodorant before you scare the crowd away! A jumper might come in handy as night falls but there have been many brazen men who have survived without one.

Most importantly, slather on the sunscreen and pop on your funkiest shades – nobody likes the look of burnt boobs and red faces seldom transcend comedy. Drink lots of water and don’t overdo the alcohol either. Wet wipes always seem to come in handy so bring along a travel pack if you can. Remember to have fun and don’t let a bad fashion decision ruin the experience!
