Editor’s Picks: Summer BBQ
Arylene Westlake | November 20, 2009 at 9:18 am
Summer’s finally here and in good ol’ Aussie tradition, the barbies are getting cleaned up and ready for some chargrilled action. While it may seem like an occasion usually reserved for the beer-guzzling crowds, there’s nothing that says we can’t lay back with the girls and enjoy some good gossip.
Think ice-cold mojitos and frozen magaritas, corn on the cob and salty chicken wings and you’re off to a great start. Add a good flash of cheery summer colour and you’re more than sorted.
Inspired by looks from Marc by Marc Jacobs et al, here’s to a hot day with the girls (or boys)!
Topshop belted shorts, $58: There’s definitely nothing wrong with a good skirt. But these ultra-comfy cotton shorts will keep you looking fresh and feeling cool all day. And you won’t have to worry about flashing anything when you decide to prop your legs up and lie back in the sun!
Miu Miu suede cutout sandals, $600: A good pair of heels never go unappreciated. And that’s where this pair of midnight blue cutout heels come into the picture – pair them with slouchy shorts or cropped jeans. But don’t even think about wearing them with short shorts lest you want to look like a streetwalker.
Sportsgirl Mother of Pearl bangle, $29.95: You don’t want to wear anything metallic near that open fire; you’d be surprised how fast a silver bracelet heats up enough to leave a shiny blister on your wrist. Stick to heat-resistant materials and make sure nothing is dangly enough to catch fire for that matter! Here, Sportsgirl’s bangle set offers classic appeal without the hazards.
Witchery coral denim short shorts, $79.95: Add some colour to your ensemble with a coloured denim piece. We’ve all seen the coloured skinny jeans the celebs have been wearing, but summer calls for some leg and these are perfect for showing off those golden pins.
Doma asymmetric front leather jacket, $875: Leather for summer, you ask? Why not, we say. It might be out of the question at mid-day, but when the sun goes down and there’s a little chill factor in the air, you’ll be glad you kept this buttery soft baby in the car. The camel colour keeps it light and the double-breasted front gives you the option of zipping up or letting it hang loose.
Issa printed silk-jersey dress, $1225: Yes, there are cheap and good cotton jersey maxi dresses out there to tickle our fancy. But why not indulge in a full-length halterneck gown with a gorgeous print and in a delightful fabric. Natural fabrics such as silk keep you breezy as the temperatures rise and the stretch of the jersey compliments your curves each and every time.
Louis Vuitton monogram denim bag, POA: Looking for an investment piece that will take you through the seasons? Louis Vuitton offers us their "Slightly Denim" monogram bag which comes in three colours, and offers a roomy, rounded shape that offers functionality and comfort.
Roberto Cavalli t-shirt, $400: An airy t-shirt with an eye-catching print looks dressy and remains as comfortable as your favourite pyjamas. This toga style number is long enough to wear as a tunic, but there’s nothing stopping you from tucking it into a good pair of jeans or shorts.
Marc by Marc jacobs cashmere cardigan, $450: Leave your nanna cardigan for next winter. Summer calls for a splash of colour and you can’t get past this Marc by Marc Jacobs version. The quirky gold buttons and patch pockets add interest and will become a staple in your wardrobe before you know it.
Country Road fire ‘Kiran’ thong, $129: Finally, a pair of shoes that can take you from daytime barbecue to evening drinks with the besties. These fire engine-red leather sandals are a charm to wear and the hue promises to add punch to any outfit.
