Michael C. Hall at the Golden GlobesJUST last week, Michael C. Hall revealed he has been battling cancer, but said he’s almost finished with treatment and the disease is in remission.

This comes just before his appearance at the 2010 Golden Globes on Sunday, sporting a black beanie with his tuxedo. Hall, 38, said in a statement he is lucky to have been diagnosed with the “treatable and curable condition” of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and thanked his Los Angeles-area medical team for their skill in caring for him.

The actor stepped up to receive his award for Best Actor in a Television Drama and made no reference to his illness in his acceptance speech. Instead, he paid tribute to his wife and co-star Jennifer Carpenter, who blinked away tears as he picked up his award. Backstage at the ceremony, he joked: “It’s nice to have a justifiable excuse for accessorising.”

He admitted he went public about his illness because he knew his physical appearance at the awards show would raise eyebrows.

“I had every intention of keeping it quiet, but because the award shows were imminent I thought I’d make a statement,” he said.

Referring to his headgear, he said: “I found this Japanese hat. I wanted something that was pretty simple, but maybe a little fancier than your normal thing.”

Hall beat Simon Baker (The Mentalist), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Hugh Laurie (House) and Bill Paxton (Big Love) to the Golden Globe. In Dexter, he plays a police blood splatter analyst who moonlights as a serial killer. He begins work on a fifth series later this year and has reassured fans that he is on the road to recovery.
