HOLLYWOOD celebrities rejoiced in unison via Twitter upon news that a federal judge has overturned the illegality of gay marriage under Proposition 8 in California, ruling that it violates constitutional rights of equal protection and due process

“This just in: Equality won!” wrote talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres on her account.

Added her wife Portia de Rossi: “I’m ecstatic that proposition 8 has been overturned in the state of California. This is an incredibly exciting and historical day and a big step towards equal rights for all.”

The happy couple had tied the knot during the brief window that allowed gay marriage back in 2008 and weren’t the only ones celebrating the triumph, written by District Judge Vaughn Walker.

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told the Los Angeles Times that the decision “affirms the full legal protections and safeguards I believe everyone deserves.”

“[Walker] heard in-depth arguments from both sides on fundamental questions of due process, equal protection and freedom from discrimination. There are strong feelings on both sides of this issue, and I am glad that all viewpoints were respected throughout the proceedings. We should also recognize that there will continue to be different points of view in the wake of this decision,” he said.

And while the rest of Hollywood continues to celebrate the momentous occasion, there were those who sent reminders that there will always be a fight for gay rights. In fact, the decision will likely be appealed and could go all the way to the United States Supreme Court.

“I am, of course, thrilled and heartened by Judge Walker’s ruling,” Kathy Griffin said in a statement addressing the situation.

“As we all know, the antigay movement is certain to appeal this landmark case…So, while today’s decision is a key victory in the fight for marriage equality, we still have a long way to go before my mother Maggie can break out her box of wine in celebration. I urge my friends and fans to stay strong, be vocal and take strength in the knowledge that we will be on the right side of history.”
