Top 10 Reasons We’re Glad It’s Winter in Australia!

| June 1, 2010 at 12:07 pm

IT’S officially the start of winter today, but it’s not all frizzy hair, soggy shoes and gale-force winds. Winter is our chance to show off our entire wardrobe, including the myriad of leggings, stockings, gloves, hats, scarves and jackets all begging to be worn again! What are we wearing in Winter 2010? Here’s a peek:

1. Statement Jacket

Forget those Balmain-esque peak-shouldered jackets—think colour, texture, detailing and, most of all, warmth! Try this L.A.M.B. linen jacket for a funky twist on the classic blazer (US$345).

2. Jumpsuit

Yes, jumpsuits are our new friend. They eliminate that annoying gap that opens up between our trousers and our tops, causing that chilling tingle that runs up our backs whenever we sit down. The best kind? The ones that require a quick flick of a zipper to give us bathroom access! This corseted version from Twelfth St by Cynthia Vincent takes you easily from day to night (US$295).

Top Ten Ways To Update Your Wardrobe for the Australian Winter

| April 27, 2010 at 10:39 am

AS the rest of the world frolics in fields of budding blooms and the crisp air of spring, us Australians get to look forward to those dreary, wet days of winter.

But don’t worry, there are always pretty things in fashion we can take solace with. Here’s our list of the top ten wardrobe additions for this season:

1. Striped Sailor Top

Coco Chanel loved them the moment she set her eyes on them, and the fashion world hasn’t turned back since. Nautical but not too preppy, a simple black and white Breton shirt is painfully versatile. Try pairing it with city shorts as seen as Oscar de la Renta or top it off with a tuxedo jacket for an office-ready look.

2. Bright Blazer

A bright, colourful blazer in a summery shade will do much to perk up those grey days, and is an easy way to add punch to a favourite outfit. Let the colours set off a pair of jeans or make an even bolder statement with a monochromatic look, with top to toe tangerine, magenta or teal as seen at Diane von Furstenberg.

3. Nude Dress

Neutral tones can flatter any skin tone, as long as you choose the right shade. Find one in a sexy, draped design like at Lanvin to transition seamlessly from day to night. Accent the subdued shade with colourful jewellery or bold makeup.

Top Ten Celeb Fashion Must-Haves

| April 14, 2010 at 2:40 pm

There is cult fashion, and then there is celebrity cult fashion. As we find out what Hollywood is wearing each week for our Celebrity Fashion section, certain things tend to pop up quite often and we’ve definitely noticed.

1. YSL Tribtoo pumps

When Yves Saint Laurent released their “Tributes”, we all went gaga for the platform sandal with its knotted toe straps and sexy gladiator-esque design. But since the release of the “Tribtoo,” celebrities have gone mad for the concealed platform pump with its ultra-skinny stiletto and elongating powers. It easily became the go-to shoe for everyone from Miley Cyrus to Eva Longoria, all hoping to get a quick boost from the 4.5-inch heels. They cost in the vicinity of £500 and come in every colour of the rainbow — as evidenced in Victoria Beckham’s closet.

2. Proenza Schouler PS1 bag

This is just another one of those bags that for no real reason, take pride of place as the “it” bag of the season. Seen slung on the shoulders of everyone from Nicky Hilton and Dakota Fanning to Leighton Meester and Mandy Moore. Like its Balenciaga counterpart, Proenza Schouler has seen the value in creating a classic and re-inventing the colours each season giving celebrities no excuse not to own one. The everyday bag comes in different sizes and offers a long strap to suit most casual outfits, made from the most buttery of leathers.

The Ten Fashion Commandments

| April 1, 2010 at 5:08 pm

1. Thou shalt get your bra professionally fitted

Your undergarments are the most important foundation in all your fashion choices. They are what lay closest to your skin and choosing the right pieces can make a world of difference in posture and silhouette. Most important of all, you must get your bra professionally fitted. Most lingerie shops and large department stores provide the service for free, and the outcome is the perfect support for your two favourite girls. The aim here is to minimise unsightly bulging, provide a smooth line for your clothes to sit on, and properly support the weight against your back. Also, when it comes to knickers, we can’t stress strongly enough how important it is to prevent the dreaded VPL. Absolutely no whale tails (where the top of the g-string peeps out of your waistband), and definitely no muffin tops. Tighter does not always mean better support, and that goes for both bras and knickers.

Top Ten Work Fashion Crimes

1. Micro Mini-skirts + Cleavage

The last place you want to show off legs or boobs, even if they are your greatest assets, is in the workplace. And to show them both off at the same time? Don’t even think about going there. The first rule of fashion is to show off one or the other, never both and never at a formal environment. Even at the Christmas party, it’s simply an invitation to that Accounts Department drunk to come in for a sly grope, unless you want to be known as the office slag, that is.

Top Ten Looks for Autumn/Winter 2010

| March 19, 2010 at 3:45 pm

FROM the wild west to vampire-goth — we break down our top ten trends from the Fall 2010 runways.

1. Vampire Chic

With last year’s cultural obsession with vampires and things blood-sucking, it’s no wonder designers like Gareth Pugh, Alexander Wang and Joseph Altazurra see fit in bringing us dark, latexed and leathered galore. But the themes seen on the fashion week runways weren’t quite as naïve and innocent as portrayed by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Instead, these looks illustrate one gothic creature we wouldn’t mind offering our necks — or our credit cards — to. Think head-to-toe black leather, the return of the cape, aggressive Dracula-esque collars, and the palest, most sickly band of models we’ve seen yet.
